The Res of The Big RH

This week's post begins with the silliest of ideas. A number of years ago I began to call Rosh Hashanah The Big RH, which went hand in hand with the Big YK, the holiday which occurs just days later. The Big RH mostly referred to the amount of cooking that I would be doing for our company.
When thinking about what I might write for this week's post, I thought of The Big RH as being a time of return, or teshuva, and I began to think about other words which begin with re that would be fitting for this holiday. So, this is how I got to the title, The Res of the Big RH.
Rosh Hashanah is not a game, but I began to think of the res as a deck of cards. First, we choose a card from our hand. We look at the card and then consider how that card worked for us this past year and how we might look at this same card for next year. Rather than thinking of big and sweeping generalities, we need to think seriously about our own circumstances and why we chose that particular card.
To prepare the deck of cards, I asked AI to design cards for a number of re words. I had hoped to get to 52 cards, but being that it is the week before The Big RH, I have other things to do this week, so let's start with 12 cards. Feel free to add a re card of your own, but the point of this exercise is to make the time to consider your cards carefully before we begin the holiday. Alternatively, think of the cards while you sit at synagogue or take a RH walk.
Before we make a change, and any change is so difficult to make, we need to seriously consider what we did right, what we did that was off the mark, and begin to plan how to make a change. Little, manageable steps lead to change.
And so, at this special time of the year, from my desk to your phone, from my home to yours, I wish you peace this upcoming year. Peace and good health for you and your families and for Am Yisrael and the world.
Now, it's on to cooking for The Big RH.
