This week in Parshat Vaera we read of the plagues and the exchanges between Pharaoh and Moshe to free the Hebrews. Since we were introduced to Moshe we have read about his deep insecurities about being a spokesperson for Gd.

וַיְדַבֵּ֣ר מֹשֶׁ֔ה לִפְנֵ֥י יְהֹוָ֖ה לֵאמֹ֑ר הֵ֤ן בְּנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ לֹֽא־שָׁמְע֣וּ אֵלַ֔י וְאֵיךְ֙ יִשְׁמָעֵ֣נִי פַרְעֹ֔ה וַאֲנִ֖י עֲרַ֥ל שְׂפָתָֽיִם׃ {פ}

But Moses appealed to GOD, saying, “The Israelites would not listen to me; how then should Pharaoh heed me, me—who gets tongue-tied!”

Exodus 6:12

The Tikuney Zohar (69,112) says that Moshe Rabbeinu’s sanctity spreads throughout every generation. The Meor Einayim explains this to mean that every single Jew has a spark of Moshe Rabbeinu in them, and through that spark we have the ability to understand the Torah. Thus Moshe Rabbeinu remains the eternal lawgiver to every generation.

What an interesting concept is this Chasidic teaching, that we contain sparks from Moshe Rabeinu.

What might this mean? What are those sparks that we carry? Well, they might be sparks of leadership or sparks of humility. They might be sparks of indignation, worry, or emunah. They might be sparks of deep spirituality, but they could also be sparks of fear of failure, of uncertainty.

This is what makes Moshe Rabeinu a very human example of enviable character traits, but also contained within Moshe were very human insecurities that we see Parshat Vayera.

Last week’s post on mothers was very long. This week’s post on Parshat Vaera is just the opposite; short and to the point. The message from Parshat Shemot and Vayera is for any of us who sometimes doubt ourselves. Let us learn from our teacher.

Sparks From Moshe Rabeinu

Success is so much sweeter if one has experienced failure.

Failure is not our obstacle, it is our teacher.

Do not fear trying something new,

something that seems beyond your grasp.

If you fail to try, if you let the opportunity pass you by,

you will not experience the outcome.

You will stay in one place, safe,

but missing the experience on the other side.

Sometimes success, and yes, sometimes failure

and all points in between.

Do not be afraid,

do not be shy or embarrassed that you might stand out

or shame yourself by trying,

for from there comes your strength.

You can do it.

You can reach a step further than you ever thought you could.

Do not be afraid of failure.

If you fall, if you miscalculate,

Reevaluate, realign.

Try again.

Appreciate the success that comes when you have gone past your comfort zone.

Remember, my children,

my friends,

my people,

that you carry the sparks of Moshe.

Yes, there will be failures,

but there will also be successes.

This is no small thing.
