Parshat Bo continues the complicated dance of Pharaoh, the Hebrews, The Egyptian people, Moshe Rabeinu and Gd. Warnings, graphic descriptions of what will happen,
the occurrence of the plagues, the aftermath, hardened hearts and minds changed swirl around this parsha. In Parshat Bo we see the suffering of the Egyptians as a result of the plagues. The Egyptians, whether we judge them favorably or not, are held hostage by Pharaoh, just as the Hebrew slaves are held, yet, the Egyptian people did not have Gd behind them, to free them from a ruler who allowed his people to suffer terrible plagues rather than allowing the Hebrews to leave.
Parshat Bo and its theme of "Let My People Go" is an anthem sung over years by people oppressed by their rulers and the law of their lands. Governments unsympathetic to the fates of their population happen still and it is for this reason, especially on a Shabbat celebrating the freedom of our people from Egypt so long ago, that I write this week about the demonstrations of the people of Iran who wish to be free from a modern day Pharaoh. I write this post in support of those brave women and men who yearn for freedom, as we all do.
Shabbat Shalom,
Leann
P.S. I write this post on the 6th anniversary of my mom's Yahrtseit. She, Irma G, was the reason that I began to write this blog, beginning early in 2020, a fews weeks after mom's death. Here are links to a few of the earliest posts on this blog, about 560 posts ago.
Let The People Go آزادی
آزادی، آزادی، آزادی
Azadi, Azadi, Azadi (Freedom)
LET THE PEOPLE GO
SET THE PEOPLE FREE
This is what dreamers dreamed
and what began as
the faintest whisper,
growing bolder and louder,
becoming a scream,
like a roaring train,
heard in the streets,
filling the town squares,
filling the air
with the voices
whose wish is for freedom.
priceless,
precious.
Messages scratched into prison walls,
bravely spoken in bazaars
echoed from one mouth to the next,
growing louder on city streets
Such is the ancient refrain,
little changed over time.
Repeated,
Recited,
Telegraphed,
Telephoned,
Texted
آزادی، آزادی، آزادی
Azadi, Azadi, Azadi
LET THE PEOPLE GO
SET THE PEOPLE FREE
Words, both first words
and last words.
Chiseled onto stones,
words transported across
mountains,
phrases braved by the young
who believe in hope for a brighter future,
and the old,
who still remember freedom.
Refrains,
aimed at the powerful
by the powerless,
the same demands
aimed at Pharaohs,
at despots and kings.
Words carry overwhelming weight
and yet they fly.
آزادی، آزادی، آزادی
Azadi, Azadi, Azadi!
LET THE PEOPLE GO
SET THE PEOPLE FREE
The taste of freedom is on your lips
Keep shouting.
We
Are
Listening…
We are with you.
and wish for your freedom .
and like the trumpets of a Jericho,
your chants will bring the walls down
and you will know freedom once again.
One day,
Maybe tomorrow,
maybe next year,
or two,
or five,
keep your hope alive,
your message will free you…
LET THE PEOPLE GO
SET THE PEOPLE FREE
آزادی، آزادی، آزادی
